Summer Job, 1998

First Verse
Fry station. Six hours. No windows.
The manager called everyone chief.

I made four hundred dollars and one friend
and a permanent opinion about tomatoes.

I would not go back for a thousand a day.
I would go back for an afternoon
to hear the radio through the vent
and be seventeen and hungry and off at four.
