The Morning After the Fourth

First Verse
The street is confetti and cardboard tubes.
Somebody's flag is face down in a hedge.

The dogs have forgiven us provisionally.
The sky has gone back to being only sky.

I sweep my half of the sidewalk
because my father swept his,
and because a country is mostly
what people do about the mess.
